About EMSELLA®

A Non-Invasive Approach to Pelvic Floor Strengthening

EMSELLA® is a non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles play an important role in bladder control, pelvic support, core stability, and sexual function in both women and men.

Unlike traditional pelvic floor exercises that require you to consciously identify and contract these muscles, EMSELLA uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM®) technology to stimulate the pelvic floor while you sit comfortably in a specialized chair.

There are no needles, no incisions, and no need to undress.

How Does EMSELLA® Work?

During treatment, electromagnetic energy stimulates the motor nerves that control the pelvic floor muscles, producing repeated muscle contractions. These contractions engage the pelvic floor muscles at an intensity and frequency that would be difficult to reproduce voluntarily.

Over a series of treatments, this repeated stimulation is intended to strengthen and re-educate the pelvic floor muscles and improve neuromuscular control.

What Is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues located at the base of the pelvis. Although these muscles are relatively small, they have several important functions.

  • Support the bladder and other pelvic organs
  • Maintain urinary control
  • Control urinary urgency
  • Support bowel function
  • Stabilize the pelvis and core
  • Contribute to sexual function
  • Support erectile and ejaculatory function in men

Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, aging, prostate procedures, chronic straining, certain medical conditions, and other factors can affect pelvic floor strength and function.

What Happens During an EMSELLA® Treatment?

You sit comfortably on the EMSELLA chair fully clothed while the device stimulates your pelvic floor muscles. During the session, you will feel repeated contractions of the pelvic floor. The sensation is often described as strong muscle contractions or tingling but should remain tolerable throughout treatment.

A typical session lasts approximately 30 minutes. There is generally no planned downtime, so you can return to your normal daily activities after your appointment.

Who May Benefit From Pelvic Floor Strengthening?

EMSELLA may be considered for appropriate women and men experiencing concerns related to pelvic floor function, including urinary incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, changes following pregnancy and childbirth, changes associated with aging, and urinary leakage following certain prostate procedures.

Pelvic floor function also contributes to sexual wellness in both women and men. Your provider can discuss whether pelvic floor strengthening may be appropriate as part of a broader evaluation of your symptoms.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

EMSELLA is generally performed as a series of treatments rather than a single session. Your recommended treatment plan will depend on your symptoms, medical history, treatment goals, and response to therapy. Your provider will discuss the treatment schedule that is most appropriate for you.

Is EMSELLA® Right for Me?

Not every bladder or pelvic symptom is caused by weak pelvic floor muscles, and EMSELLA is not appropriate for everyone. Before beginning treatment, we will review your symptoms, health history, previous surgeries, implanted devices, medications, and potential contraindications to determine whether treatment is appropriate for you.
